Coweta County Personal Injury Lawyer
Helping Injured People in Newnan and Across Coweta County
Coweta County sits on the I-85 corridor southwest of Atlanta, with Newnan as its county seat. After a crash or other injury here, the questions that follow are practical ones: who pays the medical bills, how lost wages get covered, and which court would hear a lawsuit if the insurance company will not pay what the claim is worth.
Hoffspiegel Law represents injured people from Coweta County out of our Atlanta office, and we also handle cases for clients in nearby Peachtree City, the rest of Fayette County and Fairburn.
I-85 Interchanges and State Routes Where Coweta Crashes Happen
Interstate 85 runs the length of the county, with interchanges at Exit 35 (U.S. 29 near Grantville), Exit 41 (U.S. 29/U.S. 27 Alternate in Newnan), Exit 44 (Poplar Road), Exit 47 (State Route 34, Bullsboro Drive) and Exit 51 (State Route 154). Past Bullsboro Drive, the interstate widens from six lanes to eight.
Off the interstate, State Route 34 carries traffic through downtown Newnan, shares pavement with U.S. 27 Alternate and U.S. 29, and continues east to Thomas Crossroads, where it meets State Route 154, before ending at State Route 54 just west of Peachtree City. On State Route 14, a July 2025 crash at Arbor Springs Parkway in unincorporated Newnan closed the highway in both directions. The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office said people were flown to the hospital, and at least two medical helicopters landed on the roadway.
Injury Claims We Take On for Coweta County Residents
Car Wrecks on Coweta Roads
Georgia is an at-fault state, so the driver who caused the wreck and that driver’s insurer are responsible for the harm. State minimum liability limits are only 25/50/25, which may not cover a serious injury. Learn more on our car accident page.
Tractor-Trailer Crashes on I-85
Tractor-trailers moving along I-85 are governed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, 49 C.F.R. Parts 390–399, including hours-of-service limits in Part 395 and inspection and maintenance rules in Part 396. Georgia law can allow the trucking company’s insurer to be named directly (O.C.G.A. § 40-1-112 and § 40-2-140). See our truck accident page.
Motorcycle Crashes on Two-Lane State Routes
Riders on Coweta’s two-lane state routes are exposed when a driver turns left across their path or pulls out from a side road. Insurers often try to blame the rider, so early evidence matters. Read more about motorcycle accident claims.
Pedestrians and Cyclists Hit by Drivers
People on foot or on a bike have no protection when a vehicle strikes them, and the injuries are often severe. We handle pedestrian accident and bicycle accident cases.
Falls and Other Injuries on Unsafe Property
Stores, apartment complexes and other businesses along Newnan’s commercial corridors can be responsible when a dangerous condition they failed to fix causes a fall or other injury. See our slip and fall and premises liability pages.
Dog Bites
A dog owner who fails to control an animal can be responsible for the injuries it causes. Bites can leave scarring and lead to infection that needs ongoing care. Read about dog bite claims.
Wrongful Death Claims for Coweta Families
When a crash or other act of negligence takes a life, Georgia law allows a wrongful death claim. Who may bring it depends on the family relationship to the person who died. Learn more on our wrongful death page.
Coweta County Courts and Notice Rules for Government Claims
Coweta County has both a Superior Court and a State Court, and both hear civil cases. They sit together with the Magistrate Court in the Coweta County Justice Center at 72 Greenville Street in Newnan. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia also sits in Newnan, in the Federal Building at 18 Greenville Street. Which court is the right one depends on where the defendant lives or does business and on the kind of relief sought, among other factors.
Claims against a government body have their own deadlines. If a Coweta County vehicle or road condition caused your injury, written ante litem notice must generally reach the county within 12 months (O.C.G.A. § 36-11-1). For a city such as Newnan, notice is due within 6 months (O.C.G.A. § 36-33-5). Claims against the State of Georgia, including some involving state highways, require notice within 12 months (O.C.G.A. § 50-21-26). Missing these deadlines can end a claim.
Filing Deadlines for a Coweta County Injury Lawsuit
Most Georgia personal injury lawsuits must be filed within two years of the injury under O.C.G.A. § 9-3-33. Exceptions can apply, but waiting is risky: evidence disappears and witnesses move on. Georgia also uses modified comparative negligence under O.C.G.A. § 51-12-33. Your recovery is reduced by your share of fault, and you recover nothing if you are found 50% or more at fault, which is why insurers often argue that the injured person shares the blame.
Steps to Take After a Wreck in Newnan or Coweta County
- Call 911 and get medical care. Piedmont Newnan Hospital at 745 Poplar Road in Newnan has a 24-hour emergency department, but it is not on the Georgia Department of Public Health’s trauma center list. Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta is a Level I trauma center on that list.
- Get the report number from the responding officer. For crashes worked by the Newnan Police Department, the department requires a signed Statement of Need form; the fee is $5, and named parties with ID receive the first copy free.
- If the Georgia State Patrol worked the crash, request the report from a State Patrol post or the Department of Public Safety’s Open Records Unit.
- For crashes not worked by the State Patrol, the Georgia Department of Transportation says reports can be purchased through BuyCrash or requested from GDOT by mail.
- Photograph the scene, vehicles and injuries, and collect witness names and phone numbers.
- Notify your own insurer, and check whether you carry uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (O.C.G.A. § 33-7-11).
- Talk to a lawyer before giving a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurance company.
