Fulton County Truck Accident Lawyer
Trucking Crashes in Fulton County’s Freight Corridors
Fulton County carries a large volume of freight traffic. A 12-mile industrial corridor runs along Fulton Industrial Boulevard, the I-285/I-20 West interchange ranks among the country’s worst truck bottlenecks, and I-285 carries through trucks around the city. When one of those trucks causes a crash, the claim involves federal safety rules, multiple companies and evidence that the trucking company controls.

Where Trucks Concentrate in Fulton County
Fulton Industrial Boulevard
The Fulton Industrial district stretches about 12 miles and includes more than 550 warehouses and industrial buildings supporting roughly 28,000 jobs. Its community improvement district director has called it the largest industrial corridor in the eastern United States. Trucking and logistics companies operating there include UPS, Penske, Ryder and Knight Transportation, and the district has developed a strategy to add truck parking and staging capacity.
The I-285/I-20 West Interchange
On Atlanta’s west side, the American Transportation Research Institute ranked I-20 at I-285 (West) sixth on its 2026 list of the worst truck bottlenecks in the country. GDOT began rebuilding the interchange in July 2025. Its project fact sheet describes removing left-hand ramps, building two-lane ramps and adding a westbound collector-distributor system from the interchange to Fulton Industrial Boulevard, with substantial completion anticipated in 2030.
Inside the Perimeter and Around the Airport
Georgia restricts commercial vehicles from passing through Atlanta. According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety, commercial motor vehicles may not travel through the I-285 Perimeter on I-75, I-85, I-20 or GA-400 without a business reason such as a pickup, delivery, terminal visit or repair. Through trucks use I-285 instead. A truck on the Downtown Connector should have a reason to be there, and the driver’s logs and dispatch records can show whether it did.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport also extends into Fulton County, with parts in Atlanta, College Park and Hapeville, and its air cargo moves by truck. Residents near the airport can also see our Hapeville personal injury lawyer page.
What to Do After a Truck Crash in Fulton County
- Get medical care right away and keep every discharge note and follow-up instruction
- Photograph the cab door, which usually shows the carrier’s name and USDOT number
- Note any warehouse, terminal or cargo facility the truck may have been coming from or going to
- Ask nearby businesses whether their cameras face the road, since video is often overwritten quickly
- Refer the trucking company’s adjuster to your attorney instead of giving a statement
APD and Fulton County Police Crash Reports
Atlanta Police crash reports are available through BuyCrash or at Central Records, 3493 Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway NW. Fulton County Police accident reports are available through BuyCrash or at the Records and Reports Office, 130 Peachtree Street SW, or police headquarters, 4701 Fulton Industrial Boulevard SW. If another city department or the Georgia State Patrol responded, request the report from that agency; State Patrol reports go through a local post or the DPS Open Records Unit.
Safety Rules and Shared Liability in Warehouse Freight Crashes
Interstate motor carriers must comply with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, 49 C.F.R. Parts 390–399. The rules most often examined after a crash cover hours of service (Part 395), driver qualification (Part 391) and inspection, repair and maintenance (Part 396).
Georgia law can allow the trucking company’s insurer to be named directly as a defendant under O.C.G.A. § 40-1-112 and § 40-2-140. Georgia DPS guidance also requires trucks on roads with three or more lanes in one direction to stay in the two right-hand lanes except when preparing for a left turn.
In the warehouse and cargo settings common in Fulton County, more than one company may share responsibility. Possible defendants can include the motor carrier, a freight broker, the shipper or warehouse that loaded the trailer, and a company responsible for maintenance. Loading problems, such as an overweight or unsecured load, can contribute to rollovers and jackknife crashes.
Preserving Evidence in a Fulton County Truck Case
- Electronic logging device and GPS data
- Engine control module and event data recorder information
- Truck camera footage and nearby warehouse or business security video
- Dispatch records, delivery appointments and bills of lading
- Load weight and securement records
- Driver qualification file and drug and alcohol testing records
- Inspection and maintenance history for the tractor and trailer
Because trucking companies may keep some of these records for only a limited time, we send a written preservation request early in the case. In crashes near Fulton Industrial Boulevard, delivery appointment times and dock wait records can also show whether a driver was rushing to make up lost time or had been on duty longer than the logs suggest.
What a Truck Accident Claim Can Include
Truck crashes often cause serious injuries, including traumatic brain injuries, spinal injuries, amputations and burns. A claim can seek past and future medical costs, lost income and earning capacity, property damage, and pain and suffering. A family that loses a loved one may have a wrongful death claim.
Fulton County Courts and Deadlines
Truck accident suits arising in Fulton County are commonly filed in the State Court of Fulton County, 185 Central Avenue SW, or the Fulton County Superior Court at the courthouse on Pryor Street SW, both in downtown Atlanta. Venue depends on where the defendants are located, which can be complicated when a carrier is based out of state.
The general filing deadline is two years under O.C.G.A. § 9-3-33, and exceptions can apply. Georgia’s comparative fault statute, O.C.G.A. § 51-12-33, reduces recovery by the injured person’s share of fault and bars recovery at 50 percent or more.
